James Malone

Guide

James was born in Washington DC into a long line of lifelong area residents. After a childhood of going to the various Smithsonian museums he started to volunteer at the Air and Space museum having deep institutional knowledge of previous years exhibits. Around the same time James went from being an officer worker at the University of Maryland to starting his career as a tour guide at the United States Capitol, a position he held for almost a decade. He then bent to peer pressure for always living within six miles from the hospital he was born and moved to sunny San Jose California gaining a position at the Intel Museum, California though wonderful, wasn't a great fit so in 2024 after 16 months away he returned to DC to start with Unscripted Tours.

My recommendations:

If you've already been on our amazing Lincoln Assassination tour and have access to a car why not take a day trip to follow Booth's escape and at the same time experience Southern Maryland charm. Head down South Capitol St. towards the brand new and beautiful Douglas bridge whose six arches sometimes reflect onto the Amacostua river follow Suitland parkway to Branch Ave MD Rt.5 South to Clinton, Md and stop in at the other Surratt property the Surratt tavern.

From here continue south on 5 to the Samuel Mudd House

From here Booth hid out in Zekiyah swamp before crossing the Potomac and being stopped just in Virginia at Garrett farm. Whole the farm is gone if you want you can cross into Virginia on the Nice bridge (toll) and explore the Northern Neck of Virginia which has such sites as George Washington's birthplace

You can also check out quaint to rover side towns like Colonial Beach, Virginia meet up with locals at Dockside

Head back into Virginia and head to one of the oldest towns in the state Leonardtown founded in 1660 and walk around the quaint downtown. If you're looking for something to eat The Front Porch is a great place for local seafood

From Leonardtown you can head across the Patuxent river and check out Solomons Island a gem of a town in Southern Maryland with many hotel and restaurants around it's a great place for a quick getaway from the city. Some great restaurants that overlook the water are:

(Insider tip, if you get a pasta dish and can't decide if you want the cream.or the red sauce get them both!). Another great place is the Lighthouse

And you can't miss the famous Solomon's Tiki Bar

From Solomon's head back north towards Annapolis, before you leave Calvert county though and you want AMAZING crab cakes check out Jerry's place, an unassuming spot by a tire store that has the absolute best (IMHO) cream of crab soup

Keep north and you'll find that Maryland Rt. 4 turns into Pennsylvania Ave, so you can drive right up to the White House past the Capitol back into DC.
